Be honest with yourself: how often do you actually train your stick skills outside of team practice?

Most players know they should.

But knowing you can improve your game by working on your hands is not the same as grabbing your stick and actually doing it for 20 minutes.

I know, because I didn’t make stickhandling a real habit until 5 years into my professional playing career. 😅

Skating comes first. No question.

But being an excellent skater and handling the puck almost effortlessly is the one-two punch that makes a truly skilled hockey player.

And the good news is that a little bit goes a long way.

I'm Coach Hayley, and here's my story

In April 2020, I had just finished my second season in the Russian Women’s Hockey League (ZhHL).

I was also organizing on-ice camps for youth girls in North America that summer, and I couldn’t wait to get on the ice with the Hockey Worldwide crew.

I was living my dream, as both a player and a coach.

Then Covid hit and the whole world shut down.

I was stuck in Russia looking for something to do, so the coach in me decided to host a one-week off-ice strength and stickhandling camp on Zoom.

Five days in, my own hands were getting better, and so were the girls’.

So we did a second week.

More progress for me, more progress for them.

So we kept going, and this is when everything changed.

Week by week, we spent an hour a day working on our strength and skills at home.

It was the first off-season of my entire career that I spent consistently working on my stickhandling.

The next season, I landed in Budapest playing for Hokiklub Budapest in the European Women’s Hockey League (EWHL).

My team went undefeated and became EWHL Champions.

I had the most points, most assists, and best plus/minus in the league.

On top of that, I was invited to join the Hungarian Women's National team, and by fall 2021,  I was officially a Hungarian citizen and was competing in my first Olympic Qualification Tournament with Team Hungary.

Don’t get me wrong, stickhandling wasn’t the only reason.

I was already an advanced skater, and I’d been building my strength and speed for over a decade.

But becoming an exceptional puck handler is what made me a dominant, consistent point producer when it mattered most.

My passing and shooting got better too, and my confidence with the puck let me play free.

It worked for me, and I know it can work for you.
